Vitamin E is a valuable part of natural skin health because it's such a powerful antioxidant. The antioxidants in Vitamin E help prevent the skin cells from free radical damage. It's potency as an antioxidant is not only beneficial for skin but also as an ingredient that prevents the skincare formula from oxidisation (going rancid).
It's important to know that there are numerous types of Vitamin E used in skincare; natural, synthetic and mixed tocopherols.
Natural Vitamin E is usually labeled as Tocopherol and the synthetic version is Tocopherol Acetate.
The term Vitamin E refers to not just one molecule but a family of molecules. They include alpha and gamma tocopherols and a sub family called Tocotrienols. The most predominant molecule in the vitamin E family is alpha-tocopherol.
Natural vitamin E contains alpha-tocopherol exclusively in an active form, where as synthetic vitamin E (sometimes referred to as dl-alpha-tocopherol or tocopherol acetate) contains both active and inactive forms of alpha-tocopherol.
Our formulations are made using Natural Vitamin E which contains a minimum of 87% D-Alpha Tocopherol.
In contrast, mixed tocopherol contains a maximum of 50% tocopherols of which only 10% is alpha tocopherol.
The antioxidant values of foods or supplements are expressed in ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) units, a unit of measurement for antioxidant content. The ORAC score is a method of measuring the in vitro antioxidant capacity of different foods and supplements.
The ORAC score of the Natural Vitamin E used in our products is 1300IU. In contrast, synthetic Vitamin E  has a lower ORAC score of 1000IU per gram. It's also ineffective at preventing a formulation from going rancid.
The efficacy of the different types of Vitamin E is reflected in their prices. When it comes to sourcing raw materials, natural Vitamin E is double the price of the synthetic Vitamin E. Mixed Tocopherols cost about a third more than the synthetic Vitamin E.
